5 moves the Broncos should plan on making for 2021 offseason
3. Broncos should ask Jurrell Casey to re-do his contract
The Broncos traded a mere seventh-round pick for defensive lineman Jurrell Casey, who unfortunately suffered a season-ending injury early on in his Broncos tenure.
Casey is one of a number of key Broncos defensive linemen to miss time in 2020, but he is under contract for two more years and over $25 million in base salary.
Why should Casey re-do his deal with that kind of money to potentially be made?
Well, the primary reason is the fact that none of that money is guaranteed anymore. The Broncos can get out of Casey’s deal with no dead money whatsoever.
With Shelby Harris slated for free agency in 2021 and one more real chance to cash in big time, the relationship between the Broncos and Casey is mutually beneficial.
The Broncos got Mike Purcell a contract extension. They have Dre’Mont Jones emerging before our eyes. Casey could certainly be part of the equation going forward, but at north of $11 and $13 million in the next two seasons?
The Broncos should find a way to get Casey a little more guaranteed cash, but way less on the overall cap hits as he is a key veteran on the defense.
