Denver Broncos: 5 2021 QB prospects if Drew Lock fails
By Noah Smith
5. Kyle Trask, Florida
Trask, like Zach Wilson, is another breakout quarterback so far this season. Trask has thrown for 2,171 yards, 28 touchdowns and only 3 picks this season against SEC competition, per ESPN.
At 6’5″ and nearly 240 lbs, Trask has a huge frame and can withstand the beating of the NFL. He doesn’t have the mobility skills of the other elite quarterbacks in the class, but he can pick up a first down when needed. His huge frame makes him difficult to tackle in open space.
Trask doesn’t have the elite arm that typically comes at his size, but he has more than enough talent to put the ball where he wants to. Trask has good accuracy as well, making pin-point passes look effortless with off platform throws and rollouts.
My biggest issues with Trask are his lack of mobility and his football history. Before starting for the Florida Gators this season, Trask did not start a game in high school, and saw limited time at Florida before taking over for the Gators midseason in 2019.
Trask will have to answer the critics about why he was unable to see the field until recently, as well as prove that he has a good understanding of the game on such limited playing time.
While Trask has been lighting up the SEC, there are certainly questions about his ability to translate to the next level. To me, Trask is a borderline first-round prospect who could easily play himself higher with continued dominance in the SEC.
General Manager John Elway is well known for his love of big-bodied quarterbacks, and could easily fall in love with Trask’s size and skillset. If the Broncos are left with Trask when picking, he would be a solid pick if Drew Lock proves he isn’t the guy for the Broncos.
