The Denver Broncos could re-sign former fifth-round pick Troy Fumagalli.
The Denver Broncos have had a very deep tight end room going back to the Spring when they initially drafted Albert Okwuegbunam. Figuring out how John Elway was going to ultimately set the roster at the tight end position has always included at least one difficult cut, and at the end of 2020 camp, that tough cut wound up being third-year player Troy Fumagalli.
Fumagalli, a former All-Big Ten tight end, was selected by the Denver Broncos in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft along with other crucial players currently on the roster like Bradley Chubb, Courtland Sutton, Josey Jewell, and most recently, DaeSean Hamilton.
As a fifth-round pick, Fumagalli’s expectations were always vastly different compared to someone like Noah Fant, but even as a fifth-round pick, Fumagalli had upside and was someone the Broncos hoped could develop into a consistent contributor.
He might be getting a second chance to prove that he can be exactly that for this team.
With Jake Butt headed to IR with a nagging hamstring injury, Fumagalli is being brought in for a visit.
In 11 games in 2019, Fumagalli caught six passes with a touchdown against the Minnesota Vikings.
Injuries are a reason why Fumagalli’s time ended with the Broncos in the first place, but if he’s healthy, he is someone who can contribute to the offense. Before going down with an injury in training camp, Fumagalli had made plenty of plays in practice.
When the Broncos decided on their tight end room initially, there was no way the team could cut Jake Butt with the way he had been practicing, and veteran Nick Vannett was given enough guaranteed money to push young Fumagalli out.
Fumagalli spent a little over a month with the Houston Texans on their practice squad and was only recently released there.
Fumagalli’s jersey no. 84 will be waiting for him and with both Butt and Andrew Beck on IR as well as Nick Vannett dealing with a foot injury, it’s not out of the question that Fumagalli would suit up against the Atlanta Falcons.
