Still licking their wounds from last week’s shellacking at the hands of the Kansas City Chiefs, the Denver Broncos must now prepare for another divisional battle.

Both the Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers will enter Week 8 with identical 2-4 records. The loser will fall to 2-5 and have a huge uphill climb to salvage anything from this season.

Both teams are looking up at the Chiefs in the division and likely will be for the rest of this season. Both teams have young quarterbacks that each believes is the future of the franchise and both teams likely thought they would be better than 2-4 right now.

For the Chargers’ part, they have been in every game, including narrow losses to top teams such as the Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They just have trouble finishing. By that standard, they have looked much better than the Broncos who have two losses by 18 points or more on the schedule this season.

But this is a divisional game and for the purpose of playing the game, you can pretty much throw records out the window. You know these teams will play each other tough.

But for the team that loses the game, the season could easily be over, at least in terms of making the playoffs. However, 3-4 would be a decent spot to be in.

For the Broncos, a win over the Chargers could propel them into the next two games where they face the Atlanta Falcons followed by the Las Vegas Raiders. Those are winnable games and could even get the Broncos to a winning record by the midway point of the season.

But a loss to the Chargers would drop them three games below .500 with the Raiders (twice), a better-than-most-believe Miami Dolphins team, New Orleans Saints, Chiefs and Buffalo Bills still on the schedule.

It’s tough to see many wins there, at least when you consider how the team is currently playing. If the Broncos could gain some momentum by beating the Chargers and then the Falcons, it would be a much different conversation.

Games in the NFL between two 2-4 teams are not going to catch the eye of many fans on a national scale, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be a good game. Both teams will realize that 2-5 would lead to poor odds of making the postseason, even with an extra team this year and would have many fans looking at mock drafts for the 2021 season.

This is a must-win game for both teams.
