The Denver Broncos are going to need more help on the defensive line with Mike Purcell out for the year.

The hits continue for the Denver Broncos. Nose tackle Mike Purcell will miss the remainder of the 2020 season with a Lisfranc injury he suffered in Sunday’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Purcell will have surgery and be placed on injured reserve.

Purcell will finish the season on injured reserve after he made 15 tackles and two sacks and one quarterback hit.

Last season, Purcell made 48 tackles including 28 solo tackles, eight tackles for loss, and two quarterback hits.

With Purcell out, the Broncos will need to bring in some help at the position. They have signed and cut former second-round pick Timmy Jernigan (2014 by the Ravens) several times and with Purcell’s injury, it appears likely that Jernigan will be on his way back onto the active roster.

Losing Purcell is a tough loss for the Broncos. While the impact he brings would not have made that big of a difference in Sunday’s game against the Chiefs, it still would have brought hope to the Broncos for the future. Now, they’ll have to wait until 2021 to see him again.

Purcell was scheduled to hit free agency in 2021, but the Broncos gave him a contract extension instead. He made a tremendous impact in the run defense game when he was put into the starting lineup in 2019.

The Broncos also have an old friend in Sylvester Williams who they recently brought back into the fold after three years bouncing around with other teams.

The Broncos currently stand at tenth place in the league in terms of rush defense. They are allowing 109.0 rushing yards per game. The league-best is currently 66 rushing yards per game allowed, by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With the loss of Purcell, the Broncos could very well start to allow a lot more in the coming weeks.

They face some tough running backs such as Josh Jacobs (Raiders), Alvin Kamara (Saints), and Clyde Edwards-Helaire/Le’Veon Bell (Chiefs) in the coming weeks. People will really need to step up.
