Key Matchups and X- Factors
Patrick Mahomes vs. the Denver Defensive Unit
It is no surprise, but a big key to a Denver victory on Sunday is to fluster the great Patrick Mahomes. If Mahomes is allowed to dice up this defensive unit, this game could be out of reach early on. However, if this defense plays as well as they did against the Patriots, and can make Mahomes as uncomfortable as they made Cam Newton, this game could be much more in reach than many would expect.
Malik Reed had a huge defensive performance against the Patriots with two sacks, and is now on Andy Reid’s radar. Perhaps, it is time for Mahomes to be introduced to the young Reed. Guys like Bradley Chubb, Shelby Harris, and Justin Simmons all had big performances last week, and Shelby Harris seems to get better with each game this season.
If all of these guys can pitch in another performance like last week’s, a Broncos’ victory could be in the midst.
Drew Lock and the Offense vs. Chiefs’ Defensive Unit
Social media did not expect that the Denver Broncos could beat the New England Patriots with just field goals. However, they managed it.
This does not mean that the Broncos can expect to repeat their offensive performance from last week against the Chiefs and expect the same result. This has to start with Drew Lock’s performance. He had a rocky return against the Patriots, throwing no touchdowns and interceptions on two consecutive drives that could have turned the tide of the game.
If Drew Lock cannot orchestrate drives that result in touchdowns this week, the defense will once again be called upon to keep it a low scoring game.
X-Factors
Travis Kelce, Chiefs tight end
Coming into the matchup against Denver, Kelce has one 100+ yards receiving game on the season, which came in their loss against the Raiders. He had a season high, two touchdown game against the Bills on Monday night.
However, don’t rule out that this game could be a big one for Travis Kelce. It is no secret that Denver’s secondary has struggled to cover tight ends for many years now, and this game could prove to be no different.
If Travis Kelce is given opportunities to make big plays, look for him to gash up the Denver defense.
Phillip Lindsay, Broncos running back
Phillip Lindsay had a huge return from his toe injury against New England, rushing for 101 yards after missing three weeks with turf toe. Melvin Gordon should be back this week, which means that carries will likely be split among the two again, but it would be in Pat Shurmur’s best interest to feed Phillip Lindsay early on and often.
The Denver Broncos are 6-0 in games where Phillip Lindsay has rushed for 100 or more yards. If Lindsay can replicate his performance against the Chiefs, the Broncos could have the opportunity to pull off a stunning upset.
