Denver Broncos head coach Vic Fangio said that he thinks running back Melvin Gordon could return this week.

Slowly but surely, the Denver Broncos are getting a little healthier as time goes on.

Running back Melvin Gordon missed Sunday’s game against the Patriots due to strep throat, but according to Vic Fangio, one game may be all Gordon will miss.

Gordon has 281 rushing yards on 65 rushing attempts so far into the 2020 season.

The Broncos got Phillip Lindsay back last week after he missed some time with a turf toe injury. Lindsay rushed for 101 yards on 23 attempts against the Patriots in his return.

Getting both running backs on the field will be crucial, especially against the team’s next opponent, the Kansas City Chiefs. The Broncos will need to run the ball quite a bit to run clock and keep Patrick Mahomes off the field as much as they can.

Getting Gordon back would also open up more opportunities for different things such as play-action and having another weapon in the passing game. Gordon has 11 catches on 15 targets this season for 45 yards and one touchdown.

It will also be important for Gordon to get back so the Broncos can use three running backs. It would be an awful situation if Lindsay got worn down early on in the season. The signing of Gordon was meant to prevent that sort of thing from happening.

The Chiefs are allowing a massive 157.6 rushing yards per game this season.

Hopefully, the Broncos get as much out of Gordon as they possibly can before a possible suspension kicks in. Gordon was arrested last week for driving under the influence. Not long after, it was announced that he was out for the Patriots game with strep throat.

According to Benjamin Allbright, the suspension would (will?) be for three games, leaving a hole at the running back position.  Unless they are confident enough in rookie Levante Bellamy getting healthy and coming off IR, it seems likely that they would explore the free agent wire and bring a running back in when the possible suspension kicks in.
