It sounds like the Denver Broncos won’t have to face Patriots QB Cam Newton.

Anytime you can have an advantage in sports, it’s a beautiful thing. The Denver Broncos could have one on Sunday against the New England Patriots because quarterback Cam Newton was diagnosed with COVID-19.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the thinking is that Newton is unlikely to play, however, there is still a possibility that he can.

Rapoport explains that Newton has not had symptoms but could at any point during this process. Whether or not Newton will be able to play against the Broncos will depend on when he is considered COVID-free.

So, Newton would have to test negative twice in the next five days in order to play.

Newton missed Monday night’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Brian Hoyer filled in for Newton but was replaced by Jarrett Stidham to try and get a spark and a possible win against the Chiefs.

So, which quarterback would start if not Newton?

Hoyer was benched because of some poor decision making on Monday night. There were some pretty awful throws that I’m surprised a veteran quarterback would even attempt.

But will that force the Patriots to make the move to start Stidham? Honestly, it seems that it would be a lot better for the Broncos if Hoyer starts despite him being a veteran for the reason I just mentioned. Also, if the Patriots decided to go with Stidham, the Broncos will have very little game film to go off of to prepare for him.

Hoyer at least has plenty of experience and would be a lot easier to plan against.

The Broncos gave up a long touchdown run against Jets quarterback Sam Darnold. If they were to face Newton, it seems likely that there would be a lot more of that. Hoyer is not a runner so that would not be something they’d have to focus on even a little bit.

Even though facing a former MVP like Newton would have been a great test for the Broncos defense, nobody in Denver is going to be upset about the possibility that Newton is out. Any advantage they can have is absolutely welcome.
