Denver Broncos should stick with Drew Lock, no matter what
The Denver Broncos shouldn’t be so quick to move on from quarterback Drew Lock.
The Denver Broncos got a win against the New York Jets on Thursday night, bumping their record to 1-3 on the year. While they may still get a top pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, I strongly believe that they should not try and move on from quarterback Drew Lock.
Although Lock has been out for most of the time since becoming a member of the Broncos via the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, I just don’t believe in giving up on a player that fast. Lock has shown some nice things in his time with the Broncos.
Heck, the team has even tried building around Lock. To give up on him this year would be silly in my opinion.
The 2021 NFL Draft has some likely-slam dunk quarterbacks in Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, and Trey Lance, but if it were up to me, I would address other positions such as left tackle, right tackle, cornerback, and linebacker.
That does not mean that the Broncos shouldn’t address the quarterback position at all, though. It’s important to have depth and as we have found out early in the 2020 season, the Broncos need better depth behind Lock.
In the 2020 Draft, the Broncos addressed wide receiver, center, tight end, guard on the offensive side of the ball and cornerback, inside linebacker, and defensive line on defense.
With Garett Bolles possibly on his way onto another team following the 2020 season (due to the team not picking up his option), left tackle seems like the most pressing need. There are some solid guys who can replace Bolles such as Penei Sewell (if the Broncos get a top-3 pick) or NDSU’s Dillon Radunz.
No, the Broncos have not won a whole lot over the last couple of years. But how much of that is truly on Lock? Why are people giving up on him so fast? It personally blows my mind.
Sure, Lawrence and possibly Fields and Lance could all be slam dunk picks. But what’s so bad about Lock? His injury history? I don’t buy it.
The Broncos aren’t sitting at 1-3 because of Lock. I believe that he would have given the team a lot better of a chance to win these games than what they have put on the field in his absence.
Maybe this is just a bad timing type of thing. If the Broncos did not take Lock in last year’s draft, sure, I would say they should address the quarterback position no doubt. But right now, no.
Giving up on Lock after spending the offseason trying to get players to help him have a successful future seems silly to me.
