After waiving wide receiver Juwann Winfree on Saturday, the Denver Broncos are not bringing him back to the practice squad.

Among the cut-downs to the 53-man limit, the Denver Broncos moved on from wide receiver Juwann Winfree. It appears that his time in Denver is over (unless, of course, he comes back later on in his career).

Winfree will not be re-signed to the team’s practice squad, according to Mike Klis.

Winfree was a sixth-round pick from last year’s NFL Draft.

He suffered a hamstring injury during practice three weeks ago and that ultimately determined his fate with the team.

What was once a big weakness of the team has turned into a position with a lot of competition.

He played in just three games last year. Fourteen total snaps, to be exact.

The problem is availability. As the saying goes, “the best ability is availability.” Winfree just could not do enough to stay on the field.

Winfree was in competition with Tyrie Cleveland, a seventh-round pick this year. Cleveland brings a lot to the table as another seventh-round pick (this time, this year’s NFL Draft).

On Saturday, Broncos general manager John Elway had some very positive things to say regarding Cleveland.

The Broncos are set at the wide receiver position, after drafting Courtland Sutton two years ago, the return of Tim Patrick (who has been with the team since 2017), drafting Jerry Jeudy, K.J. Hamler, and Cleveland.

As noted by Zac Stevens, the Broncos have now moved on from three players who have been drafted in the last two years:

  • Justin Hollins (who was claimed by the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday)
  • Winfree (should generate some interest by some team, in my opinion)
  • Derrek Tuszka (2020 seventh-round pick; signed to the practice squad on Sunday).

With initial rosters set, there are still going to be some players moving around in the coming days.
