Broncos camp: Juwann Winfree suffers hamstring injury
One of the wide receivers fighting for a roster spot on the Broncos, Juwann Winfree, suffered a hamstring injury in practice.
The Broncos have a much stronger wide receiver unit compared to last season at this time, but one of the guys fighting for a spot on the team has suffered an unfortunate injury.
Juwann Winfree, a sixth-round pick out of Colorado last year, suffered a hamstring injury during practice. He reportedly did work on the side on Sunday.
Winfree played in just three games last season with a total of 14 offensive snaps, and 49 snaps on special teams.
He has yet to record a reception, but that is not a complete surprise since he only played in three games as a rookie.
There is no word on the severity of Winfree’s injury but hamstrings are one of the worst injuries that a wide receiver can have. They can be very nagging and they are not something that he should rush back from.
Winfree’s injury opens the door for other wide receivers to step up.
We know that Jerry Jeudy and K.J. Hamler are locks to make this team. I fully expect Tim Patrick to, as well. What about the third wide receiver taken by the team in the draft?
Tyrie Cleveland was a seventh-round pick by the Broncos and may not make the final roster (he could be signed to the Broncos practice squad). Winfree was already on the roster bubble, and the presence of Cleveland could push him out the door.
It is still early, however. There is still going to be competition at the wide receiver position. Winfree could still come back at some point and shine. But this is just a really bad time for a player like him to suffer an injury that could potentially knock him out for a couple of weeks.
