PAC 12 coaches

Herm Edwards, Arizona State

Herm Edwards certainly knows as well as anyone — you play to win the game.

Edwards was a player in the NFL, a head coach in the NFL, and longtime TV personality before he accepted the head coaching job at Arizona State. Edwards has done a tremendous job at Arizona State, and is certainly a player’s coach who can not only teach the game, but manage a team.

As a former defensive back and defensive backs coach, he could help work with the Broncos’ young group on the back end of a talented defense.

Mario Cristobal, Oregon

The Denver Broncos have a couple of Oregon Ducks on the roster right now with running back Royce Freeman and Justin Hollins, and certainly the Broncos have taken notice of what Cristobal has done with the offensive line at all of his coaching stops, including at Oregon.

If Cristobal can provide any sort of help to the development along with Mike Munchak to the Broncos’ offensive line, he could be a great asset to have around for any sort of coaching consultation in 2020.

Not only did Cristobal have a few offensive linemen drafted in 2020, but his Oregon Ducks boast the top offensive line prospect in the country, likely top-five pick Penei Sewell.

David Shaw, Stanford

David Shaw is always a treat to listen to when it comes time for the NFL Draft every year, and he seems to have tremendous insight into young prospects all over the country.

A former NFL assistant coach with the Eagles, Raiders, and Ravens, Shaw has already crossed paths with Denver Broncos head coach Vic Fangio once before. The two were coordinators — Fangio obviously on defense, Shaw on offense — during Fangio’s one and only season working at Stanford.

When Jim Harbaugh and Fangio left Stanford for the San Francisco 49ers, Shaw stayed at Stanford and has been the head coach ever since.

Kyle Whittingham, Utah

It’s somewhat shocking that none of Kyle Whittingham’s many top NFL prospects in the 2020 circuit ended up on Vic Fangio’s defense.

The Utes’ defense has been tremendous under Whittingham’s direction, and the program overall has flown under the radar with 11 bowl victories in 14 bowl game appearances over the last 15 years.

Whittingham knows defense, he knows player development, and he’s won a lot of games.

Bob Gregory, Washington (Special Teams)

The Broncos certainly could use all the help they can get on special teams.

Bob Gregory is one of the highest-paid special teams coaches in all of college football, and for good reason.

The Huskies limited opponents to just 44 total punt return yards in 2019 and Gregory’s unit set a school record for punt average.

As a linebackers coach also, Gregory has coached up a number of All-Americans defensively and the Huskies’ defense has put a variety of linebackers in the NFL over the last six years.
