Prediction: Jake Butt is going to make a strong case

Jake Butt has perhaps had too many injuries to make any strong claims about him going into the 2020 training camp period, but the Broncos have invested nearly $2 million in him over the last three years and with only three regular season games to his name, that speaks volumes to what the team thinks of him.

Butt is part of a loaded tight end room, and there doesn’t really seem to be an open spot for him to take. He is fighting an uphill battle with Noah Fant, Albert Okwuegbunam, Nick Vannett, and Andrew Beck all seemingly locks to make the roster.

If the Broncos decide to designate Beck as a FB/TE as he was last season, Butt could make the team as the fourth tight end.

He would still have to beat out other players who were on the field last season like Troy Fumagalli, and another 2019 training camp standout in Austin Fort, but there’s no question the Broncos love this kid and his abilities have never been the question either.

Even though he’s been on the Broncos for three years, Butt still has standard practice squad eligibility with no actual accrued seasons up to this point. The Broncos also have four priority practice squad spots they can use on players who would be protected from other teams on a weekly basis.

Butt has been running in the early portion of on-field offseason work but the real test will be when the pads come on. I think he’s going to rise to the occasion in a big way.
