Denver Broncos: Tom McMahon’s seat is white hot
Was There Improvement in 2019?
2019 saw some changes to the roster. Marquette King was out, Colby Wadman was in. Brandon McManus was his consistent self, and Diontae Spencer looked like a legitimate return man. Denver improved from 30th overall in 2018 to 24th overall, per Football Outsiders’ 2019 special teams ratings. Yet problems remained.
Colby Wadman took the Broncos’ average yards per punt from 44.5 to 44.4, tied for 7th worst in the league, and their coverage was atrocious.
Of the seven total punts returned for a touchdown last year, two of them occurred against Denver; once in week 5 against the Chargers, and once in week 15 against the Lions. That is simply unacceptable.
If the Broncos are to have any hope at making a postseason run in 2020, a solution has to be found here. Giving free points and a great field position to an opponent is not how you set your young offense up for success, especially in this division.
Tom McMahon may have been gifted Sam Martin in free agency, but if he doesn’t turn this special teams unit around he’s going to find himself looking for another job.
