Denver Broncos: Expectations for every rookie in 2020
Albert Okwuegbunam, TE
2020 expectation: Package player on offense, possible TE2
I don’t want to sell Albert Okwuegbunam short. I think there’s a decent chance by the end of camp or early in the season he winds up as the clear TE2 on the Broncos’ roster.
Why?
Okwuegbunam along with Noah Fant presents a tremendous disadvantage to opposing defensive coordinators. How are you supposed to defend an offense that can line up with two tight ends running 4.50 or better?
Drew Lock’s top playmaker at Missouri, Okwuegbunam blew people away with his Combine performance and it was pretty shocking to me that he lasted to the fourth round.
In his time at Missouri, I think Okwuegbunam showed much better as a blocker than people realize, and he has tremendous hands, body control, and long speed.
It could be that Okwuegbunam spends his rookie season buried on the depth chart behind guys like Nick Vannett and Jeff Heuerman, or the Broncos can expedite his development, trust his chemistry with Lock, and put together packages of plays for him immediately as a rookie, especially in the red zone.
