Week 12: 2015 vs. New England Patriots
The Denver Broncos were in just their second full week of Brock Osweiler taking the reins from the injured Peyton Manning.
They were playing host to the 10-0 New England Patriots after just barely beating the Chicago Bears a week before.
No one really thought the Broncos had much of a shot in this game, but that’s why they play, right?
Osweiler and the Broncos didn’t get off to the greatest start in this one. As a matter of fact, the Broncos trailed 21-7 at the beginning of the fourth quarter in this game before things started to turn around at all.
After the Patriots went up 21-7, the Broncos marched right down the field and CJ Anderson scored on a 15-yard touchdown.
The Broncos got the ball back midway through the fourth quarter and settled for a Brandon McManus field goal to cut the Patriots’ lead to 21-17.
Then, the unthinkable happened. The Broncos actually got the ball back from Tom Brady late in the fourth quarter, and Brock Osweiler engineered a potential game-winning drive capped off with a perfect touchdown pass to Andre Caldwell.
Brady put the Patriots in field goal position to take the game to overtime at 24 apiece.
Then in overtime, magic started to happen.
The Patriots won the toss and got to receive the opening kickoff of overtime, and Broncos fans at that point were rightly miffed because the team had a lead with a minute to go. The Patriots were forced to punt on their opening drive in overtime, and the Broncos made sure they never got the ball back.
With great field position, the Broncos were in a nerve-wracking 3rd-and-1 at the Patriots’ 48. CJ Anderson’s number was called and he made what can only be described as a miraculous cut on the fresh snow in Denver, racing 48 yards to paydirt for a walk-off touchdown to give the Broncos a massive late-season edge over New England in the playoff race.
