Denver Broncos: Recalling the career of Bobby Humphrey
Humphrey decides he wants a better contract
After two great seasons in which he won over the entire fanbase, Humphrey made the ill-fated decision to hold out from training camp before the 1991 season in hopes of a new contract. The Broncos refused to negotiate during the season and Humphrey’s holdout continued well into the year.
To combat this, the Broncos traded for Gaston Green, a running back with the Los Angeles Rams. The Broncos got a great return in Green, who rushed for over 1,000 yards that season.
Humphrey decided to return in Week 14 but by that time, the damage had been done. The team had moved on and the fans, sick of his selfishness and happy with the play of Green, had too.
Humphrey hardly touched the ball the rest of that season, getting a grand total of 11 carries. The Broncos reached the AFC Championship Game that season and in that game, Humphrey didn’t get one carry. The work instead went to Green and Sewell.
Following that season, the Broncos traded Humphrey to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for running back Sammie Smith. Humphrey played two seasons in Miami but he was never the same player as those first two seasons in Denver.
He sat out for two seasons before attempting a comeback with the Buffalo Bills in 1995, but he failed to make the team.
Following his playing career, Humphrey became the head coach of the Birmingham Steeldogs of the Arena League and he was there for six seasons.
