Humphrey put his stamp on a great school

Humphrey showed up at the University of Alabama in 1985 and even as a freshman, was given nearly 100 carries. He became the team’s lead back the following season and what followed was a terrific career.

He broke his foot twice during his senior season and that was what led to the end of his playing days there, but he played well and played for some great teams. He left the school with 3,420 rushing yards and 33 touchdowns.

He was the school’s all-time leading rusher at the time and still ranks third on the list. Alabama has had some incredible talent at running back and the only two players who are higher on that list are Shaun Alexander and Derrick Henry. One of those guys won the Heisman Trophy.

In 1986, he also rushed for 286 yards in a single game against Mississippi State, a record that stood for a decade until it was broken by Alexander.

This all made Humphrey a terrific prospect entering the pros, even if he had to go through the supplemental draft. In today’s league, it would be nearly impossible to see a team give up a first-round pick in order to get a guy in the supplemental draft, but that is how good the Broncos felt about Humphrey.
