The landscape of the NFL offseason is beginning to look much different than hardcore fans are accustomed to. Not only is there a chance that the entire preseason schedule will be scrapped, but the league has also done away with this year’s supplemental draft.
It’s rare for a team to ever select a player in the supplemental draft process, but it is a way for teams to acquire players that would otherwise not be eligible. But it does require teams to give up a draft pick in order to obtain that player.
The Denver Broncos have used a supplemental draft pick just one time, all the way back in 1989.
Bobby Humphrey was a legendary running back at the University of Alabama long after the Bear Bryant days and well before the Nick Saban era took shape. He had dealt with some injuries in college and decided to give up his final year of eligibility to enter the supplemental draft.
Only eight players that have ever been taken in the supplemental draft required the team selecting them to give up a future first-round pick, and one of those was Humphrey. The Broncos felt so sure about his talent that they gave up a first-round selection in the 1989 draft.
