Denver Broncos most overhyped rookie in 2020 class
Who is the most overhyped rookie in the Denver Broncos 2020 class?
The Denver Broncos had a tremendous 2020 NFL Draft class from top to bottom, filled with both instant impact and players who have upside looking forward to the future.
While there is nothing wrong with being critical of prospects, my personal philosophy has always been to evaluate the top qualities of a player and not focus in on their deficiencies.
It’s important not to focus on forming any inherently negative opinions about players before they even get the chance to take the field but maintaining a balance of optimism and realism.
With all of that said, even considering the fanfare around many of the Denver Broncos’ 2020 NFL draft picks, it was hard to pick a player who was ‘overhyped’. Considering how much every pick has been discussed in the past two months, it was hard to identify those picks who are underhyped as well.
Which Broncos rookie is overhyped, if any?
If any Broncos pick has been overhyped, whether by Broncos Country or outside sources, it’s got to be sixth-round pick Netane Muti out of Fresno State.
Muti’s injury history was certainly not ignored by the NFL as he fell to the sixth round of the draft. This is a guy whose transition to football from the marching band has been a rocky road, to say the least.
As a sixth-round pick, how is it possible that Muti is over-hyped?
One particular outlet, Pro Football Focus, has been really hyping up Muti as a prospect, ranking him nearly 150 spots higher than he actually went in the draft:
Don’t get me wrong — I really like Muti and what I’ve seen from him on the tape that’s available (almost like looking for Haley’s comet) indicates that PFF’s evaluation of him as a high-upside guard prospect is accurate.
With that being said, he was probably not among the top 40 players in this class even if you only grade him on the small sample size he had at Fresno State.
He could certainly end up being one of the top 40 players from the class, but other players probably deserved that distinction with what they were actually able to show on the field.
Muti has widely been considered one of the top steals of the draft, but I don’t even think he was the top steal for the Broncos (see: Lloyd Cushenberry III, round three).
Muti has a long way to go towards proving his status as a top guard prospect. It’s hard not to love his physical skills and utter dominance in some of his reps at Fresno State, but he’s probably been the most overhyped Broncos pick so far in their 2020 class.
