Denver Broncos, Colin Kaepernick
SANTA CLARA, CA – SEPTEMBER 28: Would Kaepernick be willing to sit on the bench? /

Would Kaepernick be willing to be a backup?

This would be one of the most important questions a team would have to answer. Personally, I don’t think there are many backup quarterbacks in the league that Kaepernick would not be better than. But would he be interested in a backup spot?

Kaepernick was the starter in San Francisco for two and a half seasons but was just not the same player after Jim Harbaugh left as the team’s next head coach. He struggled under Jim Tomsula (so did pretty much everybody) and he just wasn’t a fit for Chip Kelly’s offense.

There will likely be a lot of talk about how the Broncos already offered him a deal, which is true. The two sides engaged in talks and team president John Elway has talked about how he gave Kaepernick a chance with the team, but an agreement could not be reached. At that time, the Broncos were looking into Kaepernick as a starting quarterback.

Realistically, Kaepernick has to know that if he wants to get back in the league, it would have to start in a secondary role. He could get a chance to get on the field early in a place such as Jacksonville or New England, for instance, but at 32 years old and being away from the game for the past three seasons, he would be a backup.

If he isn’t willing to accept that role, he might not ever play in the league.
