The Denver Broncos have found some gems on the undrafted free agent heap at the safety position in recent years.

You can go back to guys like Duke Ihenacho in the 2012 NFL Draft or players in more recent years like Dymonte Thomas, Trey Marshall, and Alijah Holder, another player the team likes quite a bit heading into 2020.

Douglas Coleman could be the latest in a long line of former undrafted defensive backs to have success in Denver and frankly, he may be in the best position to make the team.

Coleman is joining a safety group that has Justin Simmons and Kareem Jackson, but behind them is only Trey Marshall and nobody quite knows what else.

I mentioned Holder is a player the team likes, but as a 2019 undrafted player himself, Holder is going to have to fend off a player like Coleman and earn his keep.

The Broncos have gotten away with keeping players like Coleman on the practice squad for a brief stint, but if he’s making plays on the ball like he was over the course of his Texas Tech career (especially in 2009) he will be pushing for a 53-man roster spot.

In his senior season at Tech, Coleman had eight interceptions. Prior to that, he had three total interceptions in three seasons but also a pair of forced fumbles, fumble recoveries, and two defensive touchdowns.

Coleman wasn’t able to work out for teams prior to the 2020 NFL Draft, but he’s a former wide receiver with really solid athleticism and the ability to recover and make plays on the ball deep downfield.
