The Broncos have two tight ends on the roster tasked with doing basically the same things in Nick Vannett and Jeff Heuerman. Both of them could make the roster, but if the team chooses just one of them, Vannett may already have a leg up in that race due to the fact he is much cheaper.

Vannett was signed as a free agent during the offseason and is now part of a congested tight end room for the Broncos. But because the team signed him early on in free agency and the fact that he is cheaper than Heuerman makes it seem clear that the Broncos are looking elsewhere for a No. 2 tight end.

By having two fewer games to prove the Broncos should keep him around despite his contract, Heuerman will be behind the 8-ball in the competition against Vannett.

Vannett is likely to win this job anyway, but a shortened preseason could make it somewhat of a slam dunk.

Vannett can easily duplicate everything Heuerman does. He is a solid blocker and can help bring versatility to the Broncos’ offensive formations. He is also at least as good of a receiver as Heuerman and arguably better.
