Broncos News: Drew Lock, Dalton Risner make All-Breakout Team
The Denver Broncos have some exciting second-year players on the roster, and the national media is starting to notice.
The Broncos selected Noah Fant in the first round of last year’s NFL draft, and while he made our list of potential breakout candidates in year two, Josh Edwards of CBS Sports seems to really like the two guys the team selected in the second round.
Putting together a list of 22 second-year starts to create an All-Breakout squad, Edwards lists Drew Lock as his quarterback and Dalton Risner at one of the guard spots.
The Broncos, Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the only teams with two players on the squad.
In the 2019 draft, the Broncos traded away the No. 10 overall pick to gain more draft capital, a move that didn’t sit well with many Broncos fans that wanted the team to take linebacker Devin Bush with that pick.
But with the extra picks, the Broncos were able to make a move with the Cincinnati Bengals to come up to No. 42 in the second round and snag Lock, who was still on the board and starting to freefall in the draft.
Now, he is starting to gain many believers.
Lock didn’t look magnificent in the five starts he made last season (though he did in the one against Houston), but he also showed that there is plenty to be hopeful for and if he grows into the system and benefits from the players the team added in the draft, as planned, the sky is absolutely the limit.
But Lock will not be the only second-year quarterback entering year two as a starter. Kyler Murray, Daniel Jones and Dwayne Haskins were all first-round picks. The fact that Lock is the quarterback that Edwards chose speaks volumes.
Taken with the pick directly before Lock (No. 41 overall), was Risner. This is a pick that Broncos Country loved. Not only was Risner one of the highest-rated offensive linemen in the draft class, but he was also born and raised in Wiggins, Colorado and Broncos fans love to root on their local players.
Risner was the Broncos’ best offensive lineman last season, earning the starting job in Week 1. He was named to PFWA’s All-Rookie Team for his efforts and year two looks incredibly promising.
Having two guys make this list speaks to what many feel, that this Broncos team is coming up.
