Karl Mecklenburg

Easily one of the best defensive players in team history and one of the more underrated linebackers that ever played in the NFL, Karl Mecklenburg went from being a 12th round pick in the famed 1983 draft to a player that was instrumental in Denver’s success during his time there.

Mecklenburg spent 12 seasons in Denver and was selected to the Pro Bowl six times while also being named a First-Team All-Pro four times. He was part of the teams that lost in Super Bowls XXI, XXII and XXIV.

Mecklenburg did have one sack against the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XXII but was fairly quiet in the Super Bowls he played in, registering nine total tackles in the three games. Still, he was quite deserving of winning the big one.

Mecklenburg retired in 1994, just a few years before the team would make a run and establish itself as one of the best in NFL history. It’s a shame that he missed out on that.

Credited with over 1,100 tackles and 79.5 sacks in his career, Mecklenburg was an easy choice for the team’s Ring of Fame and he even has a decent argument for a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but he might trade all of that in for a Super Bowl win.
