Jeff Heuerman

How many reasons would you be able to come up with as to why the Broncos should keep this guy. I’ll wait because there are not many.

Since being drafted in the third round of the 2015 draft, Jeff Heuerman has caught a total of 63 passes in five seasons. He simply is an average player and now that the Broncos have brought in Nick Vannett as a cheaper free agent, there really is no reason to keep Heuerman around.

In addition to Vannett, the Broncos obviously have Noah Fant but they also have fourth-round pick Albert Okwuegbunam, Jake Butt and Troy Fumagalli. The team has plenty of options at tight end and though Heuerman could still make the team in 2020, he has to be considered a bubble guy at this point.

Heuerman has never caught more than 31 passes or two touchdowns in any one season and now that there are guys who are both younger and cheaper than can, at the very least, match that production, his days in Denver could be nearing an end.

It’s likely than many of the preseason roster predictions will have Heuerman on the side that is making the roster rather than the side that isn’t and that’s fair, because Butt has had his career completely slowed down by injuries and Fumagalli is just as much of a question mark.

Because of that, it’s certainly conceivable that Heuerman will be back, but if he is, it’s just as certain that he’ll win his roster spot by default as much as any other reason.
