Vic Fangio says Broncos QB Drew Lock is continuing his upward trend this offseason.
The 2020 NFL offseason has been anything but conventional, but that doesn’t mean Drew Lock and other Denver Broncos players are just sitting around doing nothing.
Players have been doing what they can to get workouts in and get work out on the football field in addition to their online meetings with teammates and coaches.
In recent weeks, Drew Lock has apparently been gathering some receivers to run routes and throw the ball around with new offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur’s offensive plays.
Although everyone wishes there was video evidence of these workouts, they were at least confirmed by Broncos head coach Vic Fangio, who said Lock’s offseason work has continued his upward trajectory from the end of the 2019 season.
"“I think he’s going a good job. I think he’s picked up right where he left off last year. Drew came in here last year and everything was tough and new and not easy for him. He was the guy that ended up hurting him thumb on his throwing hand which kept him out of action for 10-plus weeks or so. We eventually got him in there, and he improved on a weekly basis. We won some games, which is always good. He’s just continued that upward trend throughout the offseason. I think he’s done a great job learning the new offense. He’s done a great job with Pat and Mike Shula and dealing with them on a daily basis with the Zoom meetings. I know he’s leading workouts with the players locally here where some of them get together and try and run the routes and the new concepts we’re teaching. He’s ready to go. He’s chomping at the bit and all is good on that front right now.”"
Even though right now players are not meeting at team facilities, this is a good update from Fangio.
One of Drew Lock’s best attributes is his work ethic. We knew about this when he was coming into the NFL but he’s taken it to the next level since he’s become the starting quarterback of the team.
Lock is proactive, not reactive, and has not taken lightly his new responsibility as the leader of the Denver Broncos.
The Broncos got themselves a gem in Lock during last year’s draft with the 42nd overall pick. No matter how many times I type it or say it, nothing about it makes sense. Lock was a sure-fire first-round prospect coming out of college with four years of starting experience in the SEC, a strong arm, a great work ethic, a great personality, leadership traits, athleticism — you name it.
The Broncos are fortunate to have him.
The Broncos also now have an offensive coordinator in Pat Shurmur who will be utilizing way more 11 personnel than Rich Scangarello did last year in Lock’s rookie season, and thus the Broncos will be spreading the ball around and slinging it a bit more.
Here’s hoping NFL facilities will be able to safely open to their players sometime in the next month, and we’ll see Lock out on the field getting to work sooner rather than later.
