4. Defensive Backs

If all goes according to plan, the Broncos should be set in the defensive backfield for at least the next couple of seasons, but they need to plan as though things won’t go exactly according to plan.

With Justin Simmons hopefully receiving a contract extension soon, the Broncos will have the leader of their secondary in place for the foreseeable future.

Joining Simmons on the back end of the defense right now is Kareem Jackson, who is not getting younger and has a team option at the end of this season.

The Broncos acquired AJ Bouye in a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but Bouye is coming off of a down year and only has two years on his contract.

The Broncos have a number of young defensive backs they believe in, but what happens if their investments in players like Isaac Yiadom and/or Michael Ojemudia don’t work out as planned? Who is the future at safety? Trey Marshall?

The defensive backfield could once again be made over in Denver next offseason and it wouldn’t be shocking to see them prioritize this area of the roster in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Ohio State’s Shaun Wade has been a player of interest for a while now, especially since everyone thought he would be leaving school early to enter the 2020 NFL Draft.

Georgia safety Richard LeCounte and cornerback Tyson Campbell are both intriguing options in the first couple of rounds to play in Vic Fangio’s defensive scheme.

There are plenty of other players in the defensive backfield who could be options for the Broncos in the 2021 NFL Draft class as well, including Oregon’s cornerback duo of Thomas Graham Jr. and Deommodore Lenoir.

With some aging players in the defensive backfield, expect the Broncos to address this position group one way or another. Hopefully, players like Duke Dawson Jr. and Isaac Yiadom can step up along with Michael Ojemudia to provide the Broncos their foundation, but if they aren’t developing at the rate they need to be, the Broncos will undoubtedly pursue upgrades.
