Denver Broncos who could win awards in 2020
There are some star players on the Denver Broncos who could be in line for awards in 2020. Which ones can realistically contend for them in 2020?
It’s no secret that the Denver Broncos have been overlooked for a while. After their Super Bowl 50 victory against the Carolina Panthers, things seemed to spiral out of control.
Quarterback Peyton Manning retired, creating a massive hole at the position that the team was unable to find the answer to until Drew Lock came along.
Lock made the most of his opportunity once he recovered from a thumb injury that landed him on injured reserve. He was able to perform much better than the other two quarterbacks that started a game for the team in 2019 — Joe Flacco and Brandon Allen.
With the firing of Rich Scangarello and the hiring of Pat Shurmur as offensive coordinator, Lock may be in line for a spectacular season. Some think that he could be another player on a shortlist of young MVPs.
I know what you’re thinking: Don’t put so much pressure on the kid. He’s only started five games in his career.
Well, the thought of Lock becoming league MVP isn’t entirely crazy, given the talent that the team surrounded him with this offseason.
In fact, I personally feel that Lock becoming MVP at some point is inevitable.
Jerry Jeudy for Offensive Rookie of the Year?
Drew Lock got another weapon when the team drafted Jerry Jeudy with the 15th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Jeudy’s ability to create separation is tremendous and hopefully will make an immediate impact for the Denver Broncos and his quarterback.
The reason that this idea is not completely far fetched is that the Offensive Rookie of the Year award is not a quarterback award like the MVP award is. In fact, over the last twenty years, twelve non-quarterbacks have won the OROY award.
The Broncos have some special talent at the wide receiver position and I have a strong feeling that Courtland Sutton will not be the only player at the position on the Broncos that has a breakout year.
Which Bronco could win Defensive Player of the Year?
There is a lot of talent on this defense as well.
It was a down year in terms of stats for Broncos outside linebacker Von Miller. He still recorded eight sacks, though. Yes, eight sacks is definitely a down year for the star pass rusher.
The thing is, Vic Fangio is a defensive mastermind and Von Miller is a freak of an athlete. The two should be a match made in heaven, especially with Bradley Chubb coming back.
Justin Simmons is another player to pay attention to in 2020. Simmons intercepted four passes in 2019 and defended fifteen passes. In the previous three years before last year, he combined for thirteen.
Simmons is also an ironman type of player, who hasn’t missed a defensive snap in two years.
Honestly, it would not surprise me if either Miller or Simmons breaks out even more in 2020, leading to a defensive player of the year award.
Bradley Chubb hopefully wins Comeback Player of the Year
It was devastating when Bradley Chubb went down with a torn ACL early in 2019. Following a rookie year that was extremely thrilling to witness, we wanted more.
I understand that most players are not the same after they come back from an injury as Chubb suffered, but the keyword there is “some”.
Chubb will still have Von Miller to help him out if he needs it, especially since Miller went through the same injury back in 2013. He can give Chubb ideas on how to rehab the injury if asked.
Miller returned the following year with fourteen sacks. It is possible that Chubb will be able to do the same.
