By not addressing it in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos appear to be happy with their current situation at safety.

Despite the loss of Will Parks to his hometown team, the Philadelphia Eagles, the Denver Broncos completed their 2020 Draft class without selecting a safety through seven rounds.

They were in some positions to select a safety in the early rounds, but they never did.

Selecting a safety in the first round was never going to happen, as wide receiver was always the choice. A whopping five safeties came off the board in the second round, with four of those being drafted before the Broncos’ second-round pick, number 46 overall.

They decided to go with wide receiver K.J. Hamler, while actually in position to trade up if they wanted to. The two picks immediately before Denver’s 46th overall pick were safeties: Antoine Winfield and Grant Delpit. Earlier in the second round, Xavier McKinney and Kyle Dugger went off the board.

So, why did the Denver Broncos not draft a safety?

It is a big vote of confidence in the two starters, Justin Simmons and Kareem Jackson. Simmons finished the 2019 season playing 99.72 percent of the team’s defensive snaps. He also played every snap on defense for the team in 2018. He’s Iron Man.

Simmons should have been named a starter for the 2020 Pro Bowl for his 2019 performance. Unfortunately, the voting process did not see it that way.

Jackson was a phenomenal starter for the Broncos at safety. He recorded 71 tackles and two interceptions.

The Broncos signed Texas Tech safety Douglas Coleman as an undrafted free agent following the draft, and he appears to have a strong chance of making the team in 2020. Coleman has good size at 6’1”, 200 lbs, and can find the football with ease. He intercepted eight passes for Texas Tech in 2019.

Denver also has Trey Marshall, Kahani Smith, and P.J. Locke at the safety position. Marshall played just 22 defensive snaps for the Broncos in 2019. The other safeties are new on the team.

The Denver Broncos had ten selections in the 2020 NFL Draft, so if they wanted to trade up for a safety, they had plenty of ammo to do so. They appear to be happy with what they currently have, while adding a potential star in Douglas Coleman. Hopefully it pays off, but I feel as if it is a gamble.
