Sixth Overall (Chargers) – Justin Herbert, QB, Oregon

In an AFC West, there’s been a recent MVP that has taken the league by storm and a rookie quarterback that has entered the conversation as a potential quarterback of the future. Oakland still has Derek Carr who is capable of being a good quarterback in the Raiders system. That system is currently in the process of being built by Mike Mayock and Jon Gruden.

For the Chargers they added a quarterback that has tools capable of translating to the next level. Justin Herbert has a strong arm and can work well under the Tyrod Taylor scheme. Herbert’s arm makes all the throws in the NFL. He also needs to sit under Tyrod for a lengthy period of close to a full season. If all the tools hit well with Herbert, then he is a possible top-10 quarterback in the league.

For a team that needs to energize the future at quarterback, it makes sense to transition from Phillip Rivers to a new generation. Herbert and Taylor will work well together learning the ropes of becoming a solid quarterback. Herbert solidifies that future.
