Third Overall (Dolphins via Lions) – Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Alabama

This pick was acquired in a trade with the Detroit Lions. Miami sent the 5th and 39th overall pick to Detroit for the 3rd overall pick.

Remember back in 2006 when the Miami Dolphins opted to sign Daunte Culpepper instead of Drew Brees due to Brees’ shoulder injury? That decision has really cost the team. They have struggled to find the guy to lead their franchise.

Their search for the quarterback of the future ends now, as I’m picking them to select Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

The Dolphins are going to need to address their offensive line to keep him healthy, but Tagovailoa’s ability to run away from pressure is a very strong point to his game. There are questions of whether he will be the same type of player he was in college before his hip injury. He might not be, but I still strongly believe he will be an effective passer and runner in the NFL.

Due to his strong running ability, the Miami Dolphins would be able to run a lot of play-action or read-option plays if they so choose.

Another advantage Tagovailoa has is that he had three different offensive coordinators in three years. He should not have a problem with picking up an offense.

So, along with being a very reliable passer, teams need to look out for everything. Tua is the real deal.

I will say this, however. The Dolphins need to also add more weapons to their offense if they’re going to have a successful quarterback. They have Devante Parker, who eclipsed 1,200 yard receiving in 2019, but need more.
