Denver Broncos: Constructing an All-Decade Team from 2010-2019
Safety: T.J. Ward, Darian Stewart
Others considered: Justin Simmons
Can you see a theme developing here?
Any player that helped the Broncos reach and win Super Bowl 50 on the defensive side of the ball had a good chance to make this list. But with that being one of the best defenses the league has Darian ever seen, that should make sense.
Both of these guys did just that.
T.J. Ward spent three seasons with the Broncos, making the Pro Bowl once. But he created an enforcer role for himself in the Denver secondary and that was exactly why he was brought in as a free agent.
Able to make punishing hits, drop back and play the ball or even come up as a blitzing linebacker, Ward was an integral part of the team’s defense and one of the better safeties the team has had in years.
Darian Stewart came in a year after Ward but paired together in the defensive backfield, the duo was one of the best combinations at the safety position in the league.
Stewart had an excellent 2016 season that resulted in him being selected to the Pro Bowl. He was as important as any player on the defense that season and would go on to play a total of four years with the Broncos.
Ward and Stewart weren’t Dennis Smith and Steve Atwater, but the two of them were a great pair. That said, Justin Simmons will end up being better than both of them and he came real close to making this list himself.
