1. Wide receiver

John Elway emphasized it earlier in the offseason, but the Broncos have to be able to score a lot of points to be able to keep up with the Mahomeses of the NFL world.

The Kansas City Chiefs averaged over 28 points per game in 2019. The Broncos, despite a pretty dramatic improvement from the offense overall with Lock at QB, averaged 21.4 points per game in Lock’s five starts. Without the outlier of just three points against the Chiefs in a blizzard, the Broncos averaged 26 points in Lock’s four starts that resulted in victories.

The point is — the Broncos desperately need to score the ball more, and the cupboard is not bare offensively, but there is a definite need for speed at receiver.

Not only a need for speed, but the Broncos could really upgrade the wide receiver position in this year’s draft class.

Because of the tremendous depth in this class, this need might not be addressed with the Broncos’ top pick, but make no mistake about it — the Broncos need not only one but two (maybe three) receivers from this draft class.

Just imagine if Courtland Sutton were to miss time with an injury. The Broncos have no one behind him who can contribute even close to the kind of consistent production Sutton can.

Wide receiver is in play not only for the Broncos’ first-round pick at 15 overall, but they also could (should) use an additional top 100 selection on the position.
