Denver Broncos: Which players would start on defense if season started now?
Starters: A.J. Bouye, Bryce Callahan
The Broncos will go into sub-packages often on defense. This is a passing league and playing only two cornerbacks is becoming rarer and rarer. But for the purpose of this article, where we are only naming 11 starters, we will use only two cornerbacks.
Trading for A.J. Bouye was a big move for the team, but the loss of Chris Harris still stings.
The Broncos will have Bouye in the starting lineup and though he has a long way to go to win Broncos fans over the way that Harris did, he is a top-notch corner in the league.
The team will have to rely on Bryce Callahan to not only bounce back from a missed year in 2019 but to be quite productive too. If Callahan is the guy that the Broncos prefer to place in the slot, then a guy like Isaac Yiadom, De’Vante Bausby or Davontae Harris would start on the outside opposite Bouye.
This shows the Broncos have clear depth issues at this position and it is one they will need to address in the draft. You’ll even hear some calling for the team to use its first-round pick on Kristian Fulton out of LSU. That wouldn’t be a wasted pick by any stretch.
The key to this position group is Callahan. If he can come back and help this team the way it hopes he can, this group may surprise some people. But if he has issues with injuries and can’t suit up on game days, the Broncos have a big issue at cornerback.
