Denver Broncos: Bold predictions for the team in 2020
Shelby Manning
Bold Prediction No.1: Phillip Lindsay and Melvin Gordon will be the best running back tandem in the league
When you think of nasty 1-2 punches in the league in the past few seasons, the one that immediately comes to mind is the New Orleans Saints’ running back package that featured the likes of Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara which was extremely successful.
However, that marriage ended when Ingram signed with the Baltimore Ravens in 2019, and it is time to make way for the new feature 1-2 punch in the NFL, featuring Phillip Lindsay and Melvin Gordon.
Denver attempted to utilize Royce Freeman and Lindsay equally in 2019, but the gameplan often stalled. With Gordon being added to the backfield, the running game has much more opportunity for success.
Lindsay has busted onto the scene in his first two seasons with the potential to be one of the best backs in the NFL. With the addition of Gordon, Lindsay’s talent will be even further showcased and he may get that pay raise he more than deserves.
Denver gives Gordon the opportunity to revitalize his career, and this looks to be the best back duo in the league this season.
Bold Prediction No.2: A.J Bouye will pick up Chris Harris’ slack
It is no secret that Harris was severely underrated and underappreciated by sports media, often being left out of the conversation when top cornerbacks in the league were discussed.
However, Broncos Country knew that was wrong, and eventually, so did the rest of the league. Harris was a shutdown corner and put up top plays during his time in Denver, and losing him to a divisional opponent was a hard blow, especially for fans who adored him.
His absence feels impossible to fill, but in all reality, it isn’t at all. A.J. Bouye is perhaps one of the best team’s offseason acquisitions, especially after getting him from the Jacksonville Jaguars for peanuts.
Bouye is 28 years old and has been a very good corner in his time in the NFL so far, earning his first Pro Bowl nod with the Jags in 2017 and was very solid for the Houston Texans as well. More than anything, it seems that Bouye just has not found his fit yet.
He will find it in Denver.
Fangio’s defense will suit Bouye very well, and he will pick up the pace with the team quickly and should have no problem taking over Harris’ workload.
CHJ is a guy that feels irreplaceable, but as we have learned, the NFL is a business, and Bouye will be a fine replacement in 2020, and may even post a better 2020 season than CHJ’s 2019 finale with the Broncos.
