Five draft picks that fooled the Denver Broncos
By Tylor Walden
QB Paxton Lynch – Drafted in 2016 (First Round, 26th Overall)
The 2016 offseason was supposed to be a huge year for the Broncos. The team was coming off their third Super Bowl victory by defeating the Carolina Panthers. But all was not sunshine and rainbows once the confetti dropped and the parade was had.
Peyton Manning decided to ride off into the sunset and announce his retirement. Broncos Country didn’t see it coming but were hopeful because Brock Osweiler, who helped in the Super Bowl quest, was waiting in the wings. Shortly after Manning announced his retirement, Osweiler bolted for the Houston Texans. Only Trevor Siemian was left in the quarterback room.
The team would trade for Mark Sanchez and decided to trade up with Seattle in the 2016 NFL Draft to select Paxton Lynch from Memphis. The team was hopeful that Lynch would be the next face of the franchise. Until it completely blew up in their face.
Imagine a first round quarterback not being able to win the starting (or backup) job against not one but two players that were drafted in the seventh round. Add on the issues with the playbook and inconsistency whenever he did see the field made it a very short time in Denver.
Not only did Lynch not work out, it set the Denver Broncos back a few years. This is a bad situation that they are currently trying to get out of. Hopefully they have with the Drew Lock draft selection. But by far, Paxton Lynch fooled the Denver Broncos the most out of any draft pick.
