Nick Vannett, tight end

Contract details: 2 years, $5.7 million

The Broncos added yet another Big Ten tight end to their already impressive list of former Big Ten tight neds.

Vannett signed a two-year deal to join fellow former Ohio State Buckeyes tight end Jeff Heuerman, former Iowa Hawkeyes tight end Noah Fant, former Michigan Wolverines tight end Jake Butt, and former Wisconsin tight end Troy Fumagalli, among others.

The signing of Vannett was a bit curious when the Broncos made it because of the perceived depth they already had at the position heading into the offseason. Vannett’s ‘type’ is fairly similar to that of Jeff Heuerman, so perhaps this is a direct replacement type of situation.

Maybe Vannett is just going to compete with Heuerman for TE2 duties along with the aforementioned players as well as guys like Andrew Beck, Bug Howard, and Austin Fort coming back off of injury.

The Broncos certainly have no shortage of bodies at the position, but Vannett is a solid blocker and average receiver at the position on a modest contract.
