The Denver Broncos should try to catch free agent cornerback Darqueze Dennard on the rebound after his deal with the Jaguars fell through.

The Denver Broncos could be opportunists in the 2020 free agent signing period with Darqueze Dennard hitting the market for a second time.

Dennard, one of the top nickel cornerbacks available, initially signed a three-year, $13.5 million contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Jaguars have traded both Jalen Ramsey and AJ Bouye within the last year, so cornerback was obviously a position of need for them heading into the 2020 free agent signing period. Unfortunately for them, the terms Dennard agreed to hit a snag.

Now, one of the top nickel corners is back on the market, and at the age of 28, the Broncos should seriously consider giving him a comparable deal to what he initially agreed to with the Jaguars.

Three years, $13.5 million is quite a bargain for a player of Dennard’s caliber in today’s free agent climate, so if he would even agree to anything close to that, the Broncos should be interested.

Considering the Broncos will be in a nickel alignment a good majority of the time, Dennard would be able to potentially play slot or rotate in and out of the slot with Bryce Callahan.

For less than $5 million per season, the Broncos — or any team that signs him for that matter — would be getting a guy who, in nine games last season, allowed less than 49 percent of passes to be completed into his coverage.

A former first-round pick out of Michigan State, Dennard certainly has the pedigree and experience to jump into the Vic Fangio defense and be a quick study.

The Broncos have plenty of young talent on their roster at the cornerback position, so adding experience before the 2020 NFL Draft is imperative. They have over $21 million in cap space to work with currently, so finding room for Dennard on the salary cap is not going to be an issue.

Hopefully, John Elway and company can find a way to make a deal like this happen as they work remotely for the next couple of weeks. Adding Dennard would complete the Broncos’ re-vamped secondary.
