The Broncos are not expected to neglect the skill positions. I think it’s safe to say the Broncos, or any team, would be interested in a wide variety of players at the right price, but the at the right price part is key.

Mike Klis has indicated on a variety of occasions that the Broncos are somewhat oddly into this year’s free agent running back market.

Why would the Broncos sign a veteran running back? Well, they have struggled badly to put points on the board, in case you haven’t noticed, and a steady rushing attack could be just what the doctor ordered for a young quarterback like Drew Lock.

One of the Broncos’ supposed top competitors in the ‘market’ for running back Melvin Gordon was the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins probably have ample cap space left after some of the massive deals they made on the first day of free agent negotiating, including:

  • OG Ereck Flowers, 3 years, $30 million
  • EDGE Shaq Lawson, 3 years, $30 million
  • LB Kyle Van Noy, 4 years, $51 million
  • CB Byron Jones, 5 years, $82.5 million
  • S/ST Clayton Fejedelum, 3 years, $8.55 million

The Dolphins didn’t spend a ton on the offensive side of the football, but they still have other needs on the offensive line and at other positions, and with three first-round picks along with two second-round picks, they can do a lot of damage in the top 64 picks of the draft without paying a ton of money to Melvin Gordon.

With that said, they are still a logical landing spot for Gordon, but who else? There has been virtually no reported interest in acquiring Gordon’s services outside of the Dolphins and Broncos, so we’ll see.

Perhaps this running back market will push Gordon’s value down to a more palatable number.

Next. Grade for signing OL Graham Glasgow. dark

If not, the Broncos could look towards Jordan Howard, who has been a thousand-yard rusher in his career and has proven to work well in a tandem situation.
