Defensive Line

The Broncos appear to be in a bidding war for Houston Texans defensive lineman DJ Reader.

Initially, it was nice to think that the Broncos might be one of a handful of teams in on one of the best kept secrets in the NFL, but now it seems they might have to really pay a hefty price to get him.

At this point, there has been plenty of rumored interest in Reader and the Broncos are undoubtedly not alone in this. His price tag could get up in the $12-13 million per year range pretty quickly.

How high will the Broncos actually go here? Is Reader the only plan for this team on the defensive line?

I’m not so sure about that.

Derek Wolfe said that an Instagram video he posted was not a ‘goodbye’ to the Broncos.

The Broncos were also reportedly interested in Seattle Seahawks defensive lineman Jarran Reed before he got a new contract.

One of my personal favorite players on the free agent market on the defensive line — Pittsburgh Steelers free agent Javon Hargrave — signed a three-year, $39 million deal with the Philadelphia Eagles.

If that’s where the market is at for these guys, the Broncos may back off soon, but they also need two, maybe three starters on the line. Speaking of…

Purcell will be back with the Broncos one way or another unless they get too cute with an original round tender and some team offers him a ridiculous contract.

The Broncos need to sign two guys from this free agent crop, and it doesn’t seem like they’re going to get their own guys — both Derek Wolfe and Shelby Harris — back at this point, but nothing can be discounted. If that’s the case, the Broncos could still look to a variety of younger guys on the market like:

  • Jordan Phillips, Buffalo Bills
  • Michael Pierce, Baltimore Ravens
  • Quinton Jefferson, Seattle Seahawks
  • A’Shawn Robinson, Detroit Lions
  • Maliek Collins, Dallas Cowboys

If the Broncos get past that group, they could look to some veterans like Linval Joseph, Mike Daniels, Ndamukong Suh, or Gerald McCoy if they’re looking to make a splash.

There are plenty of defensive line options still available for the Broncos to look into.
