Why the Broncos shouldn’t trade for Trent Williams
Left tackle Trent Williams granted permission to seek a trade from Washington. The Denver Broncos should not try to acquire him.
Left tackle Trent Williams wants out of Washington. The Denver Broncos could use an upgrade at the position. Are they a match made in heaven?
Garett Bolles is currently the starter. Bolles allowed just four sacks during the 2019 season. His biggest problem is the number of holding penalties he commits.
Williams last played in 2018 and allowed just one sack the entire season. The most sacks Williams has given up during a season with the Redskins is 11.5, which happened in 2010 when he was a rookie.
It is clear that Williams has been a tremendous player since being drafted in 2010. So, should the Broncos acquire him via trade?
Williams is due $12.5 million in 2020. The Broncos have Ja’Wuan James at right tackle and will pay him $13 million for the 2020 season. Will they want to put this much money into two positions on the offensive line right now? I don’t believe so. I also don’t think Williams will want to take a pay cut, no matter how badly he wants out of Washington.
Despite this, however, maybe Williams will become an option in 2021, when he is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent.
Williams is 31-years old. He very well could be near the end of his career, having not played since the 2018 season. He could be rusty. Maybe he would excel under the guidance of Mike Munchak as the Broncos’ offensive line coach.
While this could be the case, I do find it difficult to believe the Broncos would bring Williams in, especially given the improvement of Garett Bolles. While Bolles isn’t great by any means, we definitely have seen some improvement in his game.
I don’t think bringing Trent Williams in is quite necessary at this time. Maybe the Denver Broncos will become interested if he truly does hit the open market next offseason, but not at this time for the price he would require via trade and contract.
