The Denver Broncos have a chance to build around quarterback Drew Lock in the 2020 offseason. How will they use their cap space and draft capital to do it?

The Denver Broncos are poised for a massive offseason in 2020.

This has to be the most anticipated offseason since 2014 when the Broncos were destroyed in the Super Bowl by the Seattle Seahawks. At that time, everyone was wondering how the high-flying Broncos’ offense would reload to become a more balanced team.

In 2020, the questions are a bit different, but the goal is the same — how are the Broncos going to build a team that can compete not only for a postseason spot, but to actually make a run in the postseason.

That seems like a lofty aspiration right now, but there’s no time for the Broncos to feel sorry for themselves after watching the Kansas City Chiefs and quarterback Patrick Mahomes take home the Lombardi Trophy.

The Broncos got a five-game sample from Drew Lock in 2019, and he showed he can be the guy for this team going forward. With Lock poised to lead the team, how will the Broncos surround him?

They have a lot of impending in-house free agents, but the Broncos also have cap space and draft capital galore to work with.

As a matter of fact, Over The Cap calculates the Broncos currently have over $70 million in 2020 cap space and they would have another $10.05 million in space by releasing quarterback Joe Flacco.

The Broncos have curiously not yet been awarded compensatory draft selections, but John Elway stated he expects the team to have 12 picks (they currently have 9) in the 2020 NFL Draft.

With the assumed move to franchise tag safety Justin Simmons, the Broncos should have around $67 million in cap space to work with heading into the 2020 free agent signing period, which basically gives them ultimate flexibility since they can structure contracts in ways to get low year one cap hits if they need to.

They don’t have to go spending top dollar on all free agents, but let’s look at a mock offseason scenario for the Broncos that could help get this team into the playoffs as soon as 2020.
