Running Back

The Broncos have a gem at running back in 2018 undrafted free agent Phillip Lindsay. They also have a reliable back in 2018 draftee Royce Freeman.

Lindsay has been the primary workhorse for the Broncos since earning his stripes (work-zebra?) when he arrived to the team out of Colorado and has shown that he is the man for the job.

Lindsay has rushed for 1,000+ yards in each of his first two seasons with the Broncos. His smaller-than-preferred height and weight allows him to be quick on his feet and run through tackles, avoiding defenders.

Then there is Theo Riddick, who the Broncos signed during the preseason last year. Riddick unfortunately did not play in the regular season, as he suffered a fractured shoulder early on in preseason. I fully expect him to be a member of the team in 2020.

Riddick’s ability to catch the football is a very valuable asset. He has caught 285 passes for a total of 2,238 yards and scored 14 touchdowns in his career, which started with the Detroit Lions in 2013.

The real question mark is what the Broncos will do with Devontae Booker. Booker is probably going to end up at the bottom of the depth chart in my opinion, with Riddick surpassing him.

While I believe that running back is a top strength of the team, that doesn’t mean the Broncos won’t look at options to add. According to Mike Klis, the Broncos are entertaining the thought of adding a top free agent running back.

That will only enhance the position and possibly make Phillip Lindsay more valuable in terms of longevity.
