Broncos taking steps to retain free agent DL Derek Wolfe?
The Denver Broncos will see a number of important free agents depart in a few weeks, but the team may be taking steps to retain Derek Wolfe.
There could very well be a mass exodus out of Denver in the near future, but the Broncos aren’t going to watch every one of their free agents leave without a fight.
One of the Broncos’ top unrestricted free agent players is defensive end Derek Wolfe. Wolfe has been with the Broncos since 2012 and through injuries and even a suspension, he’s been one of the best players on the team in that timeframe.
Although Wolfe has always been a steady player for the Broncos when healthy, he enjoyed a career year in Vic Fangio’s defense in 2019.
Wolfe racked up 34 tackles, eight tackles for loss, 12 QB hits, and a career-best seven sacks in the 2019 season, setting his career mark in sacks in just 12 games. Wolfe suffered a dislocated elbow in the 2019 debut of Drew Lock at home against the Los Angeles Chargers and was placed on IR for the final four games of the year.
Although Wolfe has expressed his excitement for free agency and has made it clear that he’s not going to do what he did for the Broncos a few years ago (meaning, take a discount), the former second-round pick out of Cincinnati has been open about wanting to finish his career in Denver if possible.
Wolfe’s desire to finish his career as a Bronco is one of the reasons he didn’t pop up on a list like this one.
According to Mike Klis of 9News in Denver, the Broncos reached out to Wolfe’s agent at the Scouting Combine.
This is a good sign as retaining Wolfe has always been part of the ‘preferred’ offseason plan. Wolfe has been with the Broncos through the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. He’s been a vocal leader throughout these last few losing seasons and obviously it’s been frustrating for him.
Wolfe may not be the market setter in a deep free agent class of defensive linemen, but he’s still a very good player and is worthy of a 3-4 year deal from the Broncos to finish out his career in the orange and blue.
