The key to young offense is surrounding the young quarterback with weapons and the Denver Broncos talked to one at the Combine.

Phillip Lindsay and Royce Freeman were documented as one of the best running back tandems in the NFL heading into the 2019 season.

However, Freeman’s 2019 left a lot to be desired. He ran for 496 yards (3.8 yards per carry) with three touchdowns and caught 43 passes, adding a touchdown as a receiver.

Freeman is talented but it appears the Denver Broncos are entertaining the idea of another running back in the Mile High City.

During the week of festivities at the 2020 NFL Combine in Indianapolis, the Broncos had a formal meeting with Ohio State Buckeyes running back JK Dobbins.

Dobbins is a top running back in the class this year along with Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor.

Dobbins is an exceptional back who uses patience, vision, and balance to find holes in defenses. Another great trait of Dobbins’ is the way he bounces off of would-be tacklers with relative ease.

Dobbins seems like a real threat at running back if the Denver Broncos wanted a do-it-all back. The Buckeye can catch out of the backfield as well. This also may not be bad for either Phillip Lindsay or Royce Freeman.

Dobbins made his mark in college just as much running inside as he did as a receiver.

He caught 71 passes over the last three seasons in addition to running for nearly 4,500 yards. Dobbins had 2,003 rushing yards this past season along with 21 rushing touchdowns and another pair of touchdowns as a receiver.

He is more than qualified to be a featured back for Denver. He would add depth to a team that desperately needs weapons for their young quarterback, Drew Lock. Both John Elway and Vic Fangio spoke at the Combine about making their quarterback happy and the best way is to give him tools to work with.

Look at the San Francisco 49ers with head coach Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan orchestrated a dominant two-back set with Falcons that led them to the Super Bowl in 2017. Now with the 49ers, he has more than two capable backs doing different things between Tevin Coleman, Matt Breida, and Raheem Mostert. The 49ers made the Super Bowl this past year behind a well-balanced running game.

With Devontae Booker not expected back, Denver must exhaust all options for the backfield and find ways for the offense to be better. Taking JK Dobbins with a top 50 pick might be an option.
