The Denver Broncos have a decision to make on ILB Todd Davis. Will they choose to keep him or go in a different direction?

Inside linebacker Todd Davis has been a pretty good player for the Denver Broncos since being acquired off waivers from the New Orleans Saints in 2014.

Over the last two seasons, Davis has recorded an incredible 250 total tackles. That sort of stat line is so hard to ignore. It is not often you get a player that has that much production.

The Broncos have a decision to make this offseason regarding the final year of Davis’ current contract with the team.

If the Broncos do decide to move on from Davis by cutting him, they would free up $5 million in cap space that could be used at another position of great need, such as cornerback or maybe wide receiver (though, receiver will absolutely be addressed in the 2020 Draft).

One player that the Broncos could go after if they make the move to move on from Davis is Chicago Bears free agent Danny Trevathan. Trevathan was with the Broncos from 2012 to 2015. After his rookie deal ran out, he signed with the Chicago Bears. Trevathan was with now-Broncos head coach Vic Fangio in Chicago when Fangio was the defensive coordinator in the Windy City.

In 2018, Trevathan recorded 102 tackles with Fangio calling the shots.

There is no guarantee that the Broncos would be able to lure Trevathan back to Denver. This means that they would either have to be very confident that they could get another solid inside linebacker in free agency or do what they have to do to draft one in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The Broncos have Josey Jewell, Joe Jones, and Josh Watson at the inside linebacker position. Jewell has played in 31 career games in two seasons and has recorded 96 tackles as well as 1.5 sacks. His lack of speed is not ideal but he has shown that he can be productive.

There are options for the Broncos regarding the inside linebacker position. It would be a smart move to pick Davis’ option up. His tackling is just too valuable.
