Prince Amukamara has entered the free agent pool, The Denver Broncos should consider adding the former Bear due to ties with Vic Fangio.

The Denver Broncos have to deal with uncertainty in their secondary in the 2020 offseason, potentially needing to add two starting-caliber cornerbacks. There is a chance the Chicago Bears’ recent release of Prince Amukamara could be an option for the Broncos, and his familiarity with the coaching staff and defensive system is a major reason why.

Amukamara, who spent the last three years with the Chicago Bears, has been in the NFL since 2011. He first joined the league as a first-round pick of the New York Giants. However, he saw a breakthrough with then-Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio when Fangio was in Chicago. Amukamara makes so much sense in Denver for a number of reasons.

As stated earlier, Denver needs two corners this offseason at the very least. Chris Harris Jr. is not expected back as an unrestricted free agent with a price the Broncos may not be willing to pay. Denver will need a top corner that can shadow the opposing team’s top wide receiver.

Amukamara is a player that felt very comfortable and confident under Fangio. In 2018, he missed just 4.3 percent of his tackles. Even in a down year under Chuck Pagano in 2019, Prince still had only missed seven percent of his tackles. That’s an absurd percentage in any system by any player.

One area Amukamara helps out immediately is the run defense. Because of the fact he is a tremendous tackler at the highest level, he will show he is not afraid of doing the dirty work. This, of course, is a Vic Fangio staple. When Fangio was hired he mentioned how tackling was a non-negotiable trait for a defensive back.

Amukamara adds expertise to the secondary Denver has been missing for a long time. The Broncos have added veterans before in the previous regime but this feels like a match made in heaven.

Amukamara is the consummate professional and teammate. He will continue to be a voice for players that are still learning the Fangio scheme. As a corner, he does get beat a decent amount, but the way he operates as a corner is he understands his role in defense.

Next. Broncos restricted free agents that could come back in 2020. dark

Amukamara trusts the job that he and the others have to do to make a game plan work. Much like Bryce Callahan, the Broncos will need that extra voice in the locker room. You can never have too many leaders on a football team. It would not shock me if this news moved quickly with Denver. This is all dependent on Amukamura and his agent.
