Broncos 2020 Free Agency Profile: DL Michael Pierce
By Tylor Walden
The Broncos are looking to upgrade at the defensive position in some areas. Could Baltimore Ravens defensive lineman Michael Pierce fit in Denver?
For the Denver Broncos, the defense was not entirely the weak point. But there were some holes. As far as a complete unit, the Broncos run defense had some solid moments, but also were victim to some bad games. One game that stands out to me is week four against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
There is no doubt the team needs to get better at stopping the running game. When games get into the colder months, there is more emphasis on running the rock. It keeps the game clock running and therefore less time to get a comeback if that is what is needed. So, how does Vic Fangio and the Broncos defense upgrade at the run defense position?
One option out there is Michael Pierce from the Baltimore Ravens. He can truly thrive as the Broncos are known to get a lot out of undrafted free agents. Pierce came into the league as one in 2016.
According to Pro Football Focus, his best year came in 2018 as he graded at 92.0 against the run. Scoring an A- on the run game is not too shabby if I do say so myself. They also mention that it was also his best year as a pass rusher, so he has the ability to get to the quarterback from the middle if needed.
Pierce has been named by Pro Football Focus as a player that the Broncos could sign in free agency. The contract they suggest is pretty solid in a financial standpoint. I believe if the Broncos are unable to get D.J. Reader, Michael Pierce could be the next best thing.
As long as the team can find a player that can help in the run game defensively, I am all in for Michael Pierce to become a Denver Bronco.
