A possible free agency plan

The Broncos are currently working with over $60 million in 2020 salary cap space.

If they decide to release Joe Flacco and Ron Leary, that cap space increases to over $80 million. If they franchise tag Justin Simmons, that number would be closer to $67 million.

That’s more than enough money to put together a free agent class for the ages. What’s the most important thing for the Broncos to have from their defensive line? I would argue it’s a consistent pass rush considering Fangio’s coverage scheme is dependent on the ball coming out of the quarterback’s hands as quickly as possible.

That means the Broncos need a defensive line rotation that can put pressure on consistently throughout the course of a game.

Re-sign Derek Wolfe for three years

Although Derek Wolfe is not going to be taking any haircuts this time around, his productivity last year in Vic Fangio’s defense as both a run defender and pass rusher was outstanding. Double digit sacks are not out of the realm of possibility if he can play a full 16-game slate.

His injury history has to be considered here, but he wants to finish his career in Denver. To make that happen and also get fair pay, it’s going to be interesting, but I think both sides can make it happen.

Sign DJ Reader (Houston) for four years

Reader seems like one of the best fits for the Broncos as an interior player who could win from a variety of positions.

He would probably split time with Mike Purcell as nose tackle but could also kick over and play next to Purcell in certain situations.

Sign Michael Brockers (LA Rams) for three years

Although Brockers is not the biggest name available, the Broncos would be getting a player who has long excelled against the run, has been durable, and was a team captain for the Rams.

His pressure rate is better than his overall sack numbers and Brockers has the type of pedigree the Broncos need playing in tandem with guys like Bradley Chubb and Von Miller off the edge.

This trio of signings would give the Broncos a top five on the defensive line of Wolfe, Reader, Brockers, Dre’Mont Jones, and Mike Purcell. That group has a great mixture of experience and talent, and then I think they could fill the final spot with either DeMarcus Walker and a 2020 draft choice or maybe just a 2020 draft choice.

There are so many fun combinations to put together from this list though, it’s hard to choose just one as a truly great option.

What’s certain is that having those veteran players up front who know how to do their job well is critical for the success of the outside linebackers in Fangio’s defense.
